TURKANA GOVERNOR CALLS FOR DISARMAMENT AT ATEKER REGION

Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has called for disarmament among communities bordering Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and South Sudan as a crucial step toward achieving lasting peace in the region. Speaking at a community peace meeting held yesterday in Lokichoggio, the Governor addressed the urgent issue of gun violence that has led to the tragic loss of many lives.

With nearly all Turkana leaders in attendance, Lomorukai emphasized that “we should give the guns to the National Police Reservists (NPR) and not allow them to remain in the hands of killers,” highlighting the need for immediate action against the pervasive gun culture affecting the area.

In his passionate appeal, Governor Lomorukai urged for a collective effort to gather all firearms, calling on the community to unite in this vital cause. He stated, “We need to collect those guns and give them to the president to burn them,” underscoring the importance of a decisive and symbolic gesture to rid the region of weapons that have only brought suffering.

It can be noted, the disarmament debate has always lead to disagreement among local leaders who see it as a way of paralysing communities which have lived in insecurity prone area and has made them victims by the raiders. Some leaders argued that the call may lead to future escalating fights or escalating raids which might not have a solution. Recently in lokichoggio the Ministry of internal security saw tye pass-out of NPR in the region which was celebrated as a plan to sustainable security at the border and restore hope of development and peaceful coexistence in the region.
