The Kenyan music scene is reeling from the heartbreaking death of renowned artist Shalkido Ga Cucu, a celebrated figure in both the Gengetone and Mugithi genres. The former member of the popular Sailors 254 group, known for massive hits like “Wamlambez” and “Pekejeng,” passed away this evening, Monday, October 6, after sustaining catastrophic injuries in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident that occurred early yesterday morning.

Shalkido, who had been admitted in critical condition, died at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH). Medical professionals confirmed his passing around 6:30 PM EAT after he was declared brain dead. Reports from the hospital detail the devastating nature of his trauma, including a fractured leg, significant brain swelling, and internal brain bleeding, all resulting from the crash.
The fatal incident took place at approximately 4:07 AM on Sunday, October 5, along the high-speed Thika Road. Authorities are actively investigating the event, which eyewitnesses described as a deliberate hit-and-run. Shalkido was riding a motorbike, a recent gift from well-wishers who had rallied to support him during a period of financial hardship. He was on his way home following an energetic late-night performance at Nightfall Park in Thika, where he had been on stage with comedian Oga Obinna and other entertainers.
A fan who attended the event expressed their disbelief, recalling the performer’s vitality: “Shalkido was full of life last night—his energy lit up the park. He was just getting back on his feet, and now… this.” The irony of the situation—that the generosity intended to help him navigate his personal struggles ultimately led to the vehicle involved in his death—has underscored the tragedy.
