Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign Launched In Zambia

trict Health Office in Mongu has launched the 2024 Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign, scheduled to run from September 23rd to 28th. This national immunization program aims to reduce illnesses and deaths caused by vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles.

Officiating at the event, Mayor of Mongu Nyambe Muyumbana emphasized the highly contagious nature of measles. He noted that the disease can lead to severe complications affecting the eyes, ears, brain, and lungs, and can be fatal, particularly for children under five.

“While children are most vulnerable, measles infection can occur at any age,” Muyumbana added. “In pregnant women, it may result in complications such as birth defects and premature birth.”

The Mayor explained that the government would continue to allocate sufficient funds for the procurement of measles-rubella and other traditional vaccines to meet annual national immunization needs.

“Measles has no cure, and vaccination of infants remains the most effective prevention and control method,” Muyumbana urged. “I appeal to parents and guardians to ensure that all children aged 9 months to 5 years receive a measles vaccine dose at the nearest vaccination site.”

The Mayor also called upon traditional, religious, and civic leaders to collaborate with the government in promoting and advocating for vaccinations for under-five children.

District Health Director Moffat Kasoka announced that the District Health Office aims to vaccinate 41,732 children in Mongu. Town Clerk Oliver Muuka encouraged the media to publicize the campaign to raise awareness and ensure that a large number of children are vaccinated.

Teams of healthcare workers and volunteers will establish vaccination sites in public health facilities, designated community vaccination points, including local schools and markets. Private health facilities and schools offering early childhood education are encouraged to partner with the District Health Office.
